About The Club

Founded in 1891, Portsalon Golf Club is one of Ireland’s oldest and most historic links. Located along the shores of Ballymastocker Bay in County Donegal, the course sits beneath the Knockalla Mountains and offers sweeping views across Lough Swilly.

Originally designed by Charles Thompson of Portrush, Portsalon was also one of the nine founding clubs of the Golfing Union of Ireland, the oldest golfing union in the world.

Over more than a century, the club has developed a reputation for authentic links golf, warm hospitality, and a spectacular natural setting along one of Ireland’s most beautiful stretches of coastline.

Bar & Restaurant

Unwind after your round with a drink overlooking Ballymastocker Bay, or settle in for a relaxed meal beside the 18th green. From casual bites to full dining, the clubhouse offers a welcoming space for golfers and guests alike.

Non-golfers are also welcome in our restaurant. Why not bring the family along.

Course & Club Improvements

While proud of its heritage, Portsalon continues to evolve.

A major redevelopment in 2000, led by renowned architect Pat Ruddy, introduced significant enhancements to the links, including the addition of nine new holes and an extended layout designed to meet the demands of the modern game.

Further improvements have followed in recent years under the guidance of Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, including bunker renovations and updates to the opening tee that elevate the start of the round.

Today, the club continues to invest in its future, with ongoing plans to enhance the course, clubhouse, and overall member and visitor experience in the years ahead.
